The Role of Robotics in Packaging: Innovations in 2026

Newly introduced AI-powered robotics in packaging is reshaping the packaging processes and building up a development phase for much smarter, quicker, and more adaptable automated solutions.

All these technology-driven innovations are leading towards a significant increase in production, efficiency, and flexibility in the packaging box industry and are also helpful in reducing labour costs.

Traditionally, packaging machinery used to align perfectly when products used to be uniform and predictable, but nowadays, manufacturers have to deal with keeping more stock units, more variability, and increased changeovers, and that's exactly the segment where AI is making a great impact.

Here is an interesting fact for you: the global packaging robots market is forecasted to grow from USD 8.33 billion (recorded in 2025) to around USD 23.64 billion by 2035 with an annual growth rate of almost 11%!

In this blog, we are going to unpack what packaging automation actually is and what innovations lie ahead in 2026. Let's begin!

What is Packaging Automation?

As the world is shifting towards e-commerce exponentially in recent times, the number of shipments is also increasing drastically. Therefore, the need to optimize the packaging industry has subsequently increased, as companies now need more storage and protection for their products as well.

To carry out this process successfully, distinctive technologies arebeing utilised, which makes the process automatic without the need for any human intervention.

Main technologies being embedded include collaborative robotics, where tasks that used to be done manually are performed by robots. And other additional technologies, such as AGV or deep learning, to support and complement packaging.

Different Robotic Technologies Integrated in 2026

Robotics in packaging signifies the incorporation of digital technologies and mechatronics to automate lengthy manual processes. Major robotic types include:

1. Delta Robots: They are famous for their lightweight design and speed, optimal for high-frequency pick-and-drop operations.

2. Cobots (Collaborative Robots): Best known for their collaborative nature, they operate alongside human workers without creating any physical barrier.

3. SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) Robots: They are usually compact in size and effective for assembling tasks.

Competitive Edge of Robotics in the Packaging Industry

Integrating robotics in packaging can offer various benefits across multiple domains, such as

  1. Quality and Precision: Constant, accurate movements reduce or minimise the chances of errors.
  2. Resource Optimisation: Workers and operators don't have to perform low-value-added or time-consuming tasks anymore.
  3. Manufacturing Efficiency: The robots complete tasks in minimum time, reducing the cycle time and putting in increased throughput and faster processing.
  4. Security and Risk Mitigation: Incorporating robotics in daily tasks might reduce the risk of having an injury due to repetitive or strenuous tasks.

Flexibility & Ease of Installation: Cobots, in particular, are gaining popularity in the packaging industry, as they are easy to install, and their fast mobility allows room for quick integration without re-engineering existing production infrastructure.

What's New in 2026

A newly developed automated robot, namely MOTOPAK, is designed for a flexible carton packing line. It works in accordance with the old MOTOPAL palletising cell and will exchange with the company’s newly launched AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots).

Another new launch in robotic automation has been developed by Sweden’s Yaskawa Nordic company in collaboration with Robotic Automation, the PackMaster. It is a completely automatic, mixed palletising fix for efficient palletising of various categories of products on different sizes of pallets.

A recent announcement unveiled that the upcoming CeMAT/Industrial Transformation show will be held in Sydney from 22 to 24 July 2026, where Robotic Automation will display the PackMaster Gripper along with other robots such as the Motoman Yaskawa HC10 cobot, the Motoman Yaskawa GP180 robot, and the GP12 robot. The AMR range will also be displayed alongside the popular FX08 AGV forklift.

What Lies Ahead for Smart Automation?

IoT intelligent dashboards will simplify the system control and make adjustments much faster. Another feature in smart packaging being implemented is IoT remote monitoring, which prevents unplanned or accidental machine failures.

The third feature that is being widely applied in 2026 is AI-driven decision-making that enables issue resolution much quicker than in the past.

AI marketing expert Anthony Romeo highlights: "Smart decision-making starts with AI. Historically, solutions used to take longer periods of time and proved to be unviable and inefficient, but with the launch and steady use of AI and smart automation, these solutions can be quicker, more practical, and data-driven.

Concluding Remarks

Robotics has transitioned from being a mere option in the packaging supply chain to becoming a necessity and part of the daily workload. From big industrial corporations to SMEs, incorporating robotics not only enhances productivity but also ensures safety, quality & sustainability.
